Why Goals Are Essential - TAMBERDI

Why Goals Are Essential

5:00:00 AM

I set goals for myself in every realm of life- health, school, my blog, my income from writing, and more. When I was younger, I wondered why people would actually set them as opposed to just getting to work, but let me tell you here and now- they shoot you right where you wanna be if you use them as a guide.

Setting goals will do wonders for you and your endeavors. Here's how:

  1. Tracking Progress. If you forget where you started and the steps you've taken along the way, no matter how small, you won't be motivated to continue as you won't have seen any change.
  2. Having Motivation. This correlates with tracking progress through goal-setting. Goals teach you how to incorporate delayed gratification into your life. Much in the same way that putting something off for longer makes the negative consequences worse, working towards something for longer makes the positive results feel so much greater! You'll be more motivated to act according to your ambitions when you see a clear vision of what you want.
  3. Being Held Accountable. We all know what is good for us and what is bad for us, what propels us forward and what sets us back. When we set a definite, specific goal though, we are more likely to go the extra degree to meet it- resulting in more positive, productive actions being taken.
  4. Taking the Right Steps. When working toward an ambiguous end destination, it's hard to decide what you have to do to 'get there'. When you have a plan, full of specified 'pit-stops' or 'checkpoints' you're going to be going in the right direction in the first place. Having everything planned out can often mean avoiding taking two steps forward and one step back. Taking the right steps through setting goals will make you a more driven and high-achieving person.

What goals do you set for yourself? What are you hoping to accomplish in the next year? Leave me a comment!

  2. I use the S.M.A.R.T. goal setting strategy for medium and long term goals to make sure that I'm on track to achieve these goals. I use this in professional project management as well as personal goals management. I like the fact that these goals are time-bound so they don't creep :)

  3. I'll also add Joy to the SMART strategy. Your goals should result in Joy when you accomplish them. Goals should motivate you and they should be clear enough that each decision and action you make is towards that goal. I think the New Year is a great time to create some goals, but goal creation should be constant. Once you reach a goal, cross it out and create new ones.
